About Hoa Vietnam People

Hoa Vietnamese comprise approximately 0.8% of the Vietnamese population per the 2019 Census — approximately 750,000, the Chinese-Vietnamese minority. Substantially reduced from earlier 20th-c. peaks (the population was approximately 1.2 million in 1976 immediately following the Vietnam War unification; the post-1975 expulsion / departure of Chinese-Vietnamese in the late 1970s was substantial — the so-called 'boat people' crisis included substantial Chinese-Vietnamese refugee outflow as targeted population, with approximately 250,000 Chinese-Vietnamese resettling in China through 1978-1979 and additional substantial outflow to Hong Kong, the United States, Australia, Canada, France, and other destinations). Concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City (the Cholon Chinatown — the largest historic Chinatown in Southeast Asia) plus Hanoi and other major cities. Predominantly Cantonese-source plus Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka sub-populations.
