About Arab Indonesian People

Arab Indonesians comprise approximately 0.5% of the Indonesian population — approximately 1.2+ million, descendants of medieval Arab merchants (predominantly Hadhrami Yemen origin) who settled the Indonesian archipelago via the Indian Ocean trade routes plus subsequent immigration. Concentrated in Jakarta (the Pekojan and Condet Arab-Indonesian neighborhoods), Surabaya (the Ampel Arab-Indonesian neighborhood), Pekalongan, Cirebon, and other historic trading cities. The community has been religiously and culturally prominent in Indonesian Islamic religious institutions — substantial numbers of prominent Indonesian Muslim scholars, religious-political leaders, and entrepreneurs are of Hadhrami-Yemeni descent. The community is divided into sayyid (descendants of Prophet Muhammad through Husayn ibn Ali, particularly significant in Indonesian-Islamic religious-genealogical hierarchies) and non-sayyid sub-populations.
