About Turkish Cypriot People

Turkish Cypriots comprise approximately 18% of the Cyprus population — approximately 205,000+, predominantly Sunni Muslim. Concentrated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC, recognized only by Turkey; not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus, the European Union, the United Nations, or the international community broadly). The Turkish-Cypriot ethnogenesis traces to the post-1571 Ottoman conquest of Cyprus and subsequent Turkish-Anatolian settlement plus partial conversion of the broader Cypriot population. The TRNC was established following the 1974 Turkish invasion and the population transfers that displaced the Greek-Cypriot population from the north and the Turkish-Cypriot population from the south.
