About Mainlander Hong Kong People

Mainlander Hong Kong residents comprise approximately 8% of the Hong Kong resident population — non-Cantonese Han Chinese residents predominantly from mainland Chinese provinces other than Guangdong, including Mandarin-speaking residents from Beijing/Shanghai/and-other-northern-and-eastern provinces, Hakka-speaking residents (the longer-resident Hakka community of the New Territories), Hokkien-speaking residents (Fujian-origin migrants), Wu-speaking residents (Shanghai-origin), and other regional Chinese sub-groups. The community has grown substantially since the 1997 handover under the One-Way Permit migration channel (allowing approximately 150 mainland Chinese family-reunification migrants per day to Hong Kong) plus the various professional and investor migration channels. The community is heterogeneous in regional origin and shows phenotype distribution spanning the full Han Chinese north-south range.

Phenotype distribution is heterogeneous reflecting the diverse mainland-Chinese regional origins — Northern-origin sub-populations (Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong, Sichuan, etc.) show Northern Han phenotype distribution (somewhat lighter Fitzpatrick II-III, somewhat taller stature); Southern-origin sub-populations show Southern Han phenotype distribution similar to or identical with Cantonese Hong Kong residents.
