About Kurd People
Kurds are a major Iranian-language ethnic group concentrated in the broader Kurdistan region across Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey — approximately 30-45 million globally, making Kurds the largest stateless ethnic group in the world. Iranian Kurds (~8.5M+) concentrated in western Iran (Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, Ilam provinces). Iraqi Kurds (~6M+) concentrated in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok provinces — substantially autonomous federal region within Iraq since 1991). Turkish Kurds (~16-20M+) concentrated in southeastern Turkey (the largest single Kurdish national population, separately enumerated under TR). Syrian Kurds (~2-3M+) concentrated in northeastern Syria (the de facto autonomous Rojava / Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria). Plus substantial Kurdish diaspora in Germany (~1M+), Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, Israel, and elsewhere. The Kurdish languages are part of the Northwestern Iranian branch of Indo-Iranian (related to Persian, distinct from but related to Pashto and Baluchi). Major Kurdish dialects: Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish, the largest, predominantly Turkish Kurds plus Syrian Kurds plus the smaller Iranian Kurmanji communities), Sorani (Central Kurdish, predominantly Iraqi Kurds and southern Iranian Kurds), Pehlewani (Southern Kurdish, predominantly western Iranian Kurds), plus smaller varieties. Predominantly Sunni Muslim with substantial Shia Muslim (Iranian Kurds in particular include substantial Shia sub-populations), Yazidi (the Iraqi Yazidis are Kurdish-language-speaking but distinct in religious tradition), Yarsani / Ahl-e Haqq (a Kurdish syncretic religious tradition), Alevi (overlapping with Turkish-Alevi populations), Christian (small communities), and Jewish (the historic Kurdish Jewish community of Iraqi-Iranian Kurdistan has substantially emigrated to Israel) sub-populations.
