About Hoklo Taiwanese People
Hoklo Taiwanese (also called Hokkien Taiwanese, Min Nan Taiwanese, or Holo) comprise approximately 70% of the Taiwanese population — the largest ethnic group in Taiwan. The community descends from Min-Nan-speaking Han Chinese migrants from Fujian Province (predominantly Quanzhou-prefecture and Zhangzhou-prefecture origins) who settled Taiwan during the 17th-19th c. Qing-period migration, with substantial demographic continuity through the 1895-1945 Japanese colonial period and the post-1945 Republic of China period. The Hoklo speak Taiwanese Hokkien (Tâi-gí / 台語), a Min Nan language closely related to but distinct from Standard Chinese (Mandarin), plus Mandarin Chinese (the official Taiwanese-state language). Cultural distinctness from broader Han Chinese populations includes substantial pre-Han Indigenous (Pingpu) admixture documented in genome-wide studies (Chen et al. 2014, Lin et al. 2019), the Tao-influenced popular religion with the Mazu sea-goddess tradition particularly central, and Taiwanese-Hokkien-language cultural production (literature, music, theater).
Typical Hoklo Taiwanese Phenotypes
Reference for AI generation — hair, eyes, skin, facial structure, build
Skin tone is predominantly Fitzpatrick III-IV — somewhat darker than Northern Han Chinese, similar to Southern Han Chinese, reflecting both UV exposure in the warm subtropical Taiwanese climate and the southern-Chinese genetic source population plus pre-Han Indigenous admixture. Hair is uniformly straight (Andre Walker 1A-1B), uniformly black to very dark brown. Facial features track Southern East Asian source populations: epicanthic-fold variants nearly universal, moderate-to-broader nasal bridges, oval-to-rounded face shapes. Eye color is brown to dark brown. Build is intermediate; adult Taiwanese male mean stature is approximately 171-173 cm in 2010s-2020s cohorts. Within-population variance is moderate; subtle Quanzhou-vs-Zhangzhou origin-region differentiation is detectable in genetic studies but minimal in visible phenotype.
