About Circassian Jordan People

Jordanian Circassians comprise approximately 1% of the Jordanian population — approximately 100,000+, descendants of 19th-c. Circassian refugees from the Russian Caucasus (the post-1864 Circassian genocide expulsion produced approximately 1.5M+ Circassian refugees who settled in the Ottoman Empire including the Levant — Adyghe, Kabardian, and other Circassian sub-populations). Concentrated in Amman (the historic Circassian foundation of modern Amman in 1878 by Circassian refugees), Wadi as-Sir, Naur, plus other communities. The community has been politically and militarily prominent in Jordan including the Royal Hashemite Court Guards (the ceremonial palace guards are predominantly Circassian).
