About Bedouin People
Bedouins are an Arab pastoral-nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnic-tribal grouping concentrated across the Arabian Peninsula and Levantine deserts — approximately 4-7 million globally, distributed across Saudi Arabia (the largest single national Bedouin population, ~1-2M+), Jordan (~1M+, where Bedouins have been politically dominant under the Hashemite monarchy), Iraq (~150,000+ in western Anbar plus southern desert), Syria, Egypt (Sinai Peninsula and Western Desert), Israel/Palestine (the Negev Bedouin community, ~250,000+ in Israel plus substantial West Bank Bedouin), Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, and the broader Arabian-Levantine desert zones. Distinct from broader settled-Arab populations through the tribal-pastoral cultural-political identity, the historical pastoral-camel-and-sheep economy, the distinctive tribal-confederation political organization, and the substantial cultural-poetic-musical traditions. Predominantly Sunni Muslim. Bedouin tribal identity is structured around major tribal-confederations including Anizah, Shammar, Banu Sakhr, Howeitat, Banu Hilal, Banu Hassan, Bani Sakhr, Tikriti, Shimar, plus many others. Many Bedouin communities have been substantially settled / sedentarized over the 20th century but maintain Bedouin cultural-political identity.
