White Venezuelans comprise approximately 44% of the population per the 2011 INE census. The community traces ancestry primarily to Spanish colonial settlement (Canarian Spanish were the largest colonial-era immigration source — Venezuela received more Canarian immigrants than any other Spanish American colony, producing distinct cultural and linguistic features in Venezuelan Spanish) and to the very large 20th c. immigration waves: Italian (the largest single 20th c. origin, with approximately 5-6 million Venezuelans of full or partial Italian descent), Portuguese (especially from the Madeira islands), Spanish (Galician, Asturian, Canarian post-civil-war), German (the small but culturally distinct Colonia Tovar settlement in Aragua, founded 1843), Lebanese-Syrian, and other groups. Concentrated in Caracas, the central coastal zone, Maracaibo, Valencia, and the Andean cities (Mérida, San Cristóbal). Italian-Venezuelan and Portuguese-Venezuelan sub-communities are large and culturally salient.
