About Tharu People

Tharus comprise approximately 6.3% of the Nepalese population — approximately 1.8 million, concentrated in the Terai (the lowland plain along the Indian border). The Tharu are the Indigenous people of the Terai with substantial cross-border population in Indian Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The community comprises multiple sub-groups (Rana Tharu of the western Terai, Dangaura Tharu of the central-western Terai, Chitwania Tharu of central Terai, Kochila Tharu of eastern Terai) with distinct dialects and customs. The Tharu language is part of the Indo-Aryan family with substantial Tibeto-Burman influence. Genetic studies document substantial Tharu adaptation to malaria and other Terai-environment challenges including the historically significant fact that Tharu populations show substantially lower malaria susceptibility than non-Tharu populations of the same region — used historically by the Tharu themselves and by external researchers as evidence of long Indigenous Terai habitation.
