About Balochi People
Balochis comprise approximately 4% of the Pakistani population per the 2017 Census — approximately 9.5+ million Balochi Mother Tongue speakers in Pakistan, concentrated in Balochistan Province in southwestern Pakistan along the Iranian and Afghan borders. Cross-border population shared with Iran (~1.5M+ Iranian Balochi in Sistan-Baluchestan Province) and Afghanistan (~600,000+). The Balochi language is part of the Northwestern Iranian branch of Indo-Iranian (related to Kurdish; distinct from Persian/Pashto/Urdu). Baloch tribal organization is structured around the major tribes (Marri, Bugti, Mengal, Bizenjo, etc.). The community has been the subject of long-running insurgency against Pakistani federal authority with documented human-rights violations.
