About Tebu People

Tebu (Toubou) populations comprise approximately 1.5% of the Libyan population — approximately 100,000+ in Libya, plus the substantial cross-border populations in Chad (~700,000+) and Niger (~50,000+). Concentrated in southern Libya (Kufra, Murzuq) plus the Tibesti Mountains region of Chad and northern Niger. Distinct Sub-Saharan African / Nilo-Saharan source population, Indigenous to the Tibesti Mountains and surrounding Saharan zones. The Tebu language is part of the Saharan branch of the Nilo-Saharan family. Predominantly Sunni Muslim. The Tebu community has faced documented marginalization under Libyan state policy and substantial post-2011 civil-war-period violence.
