About Berber Libyan People

Berber-Libyans comprise approximately 9% of the Libyan population — concentrated in the Nafusa Mountains (Jebel Nafusa) in northwestern Libya plus Zuwara coastal area plus Ghadames and other oasis communities. Major sub-groups: Nafusi (Western Berber, the largest Libyan-Berber group, predominantly Ibadi Muslim — distinct from the Sunni majority), Ghadamès (oasis community with distinctive Berber-Arab cultural fusion), Awjila (eastern oasis Berber community). The Berber-Libyan community faced substantial linguistic-cultural suppression under the Gaddafi regime (1969-2011) but has experienced revival since the 2011 Libyan civil war.
