About Rai People

Rai populations comprise approximately 2.3% of the Nepalese population — approximately 654,000, an umbrella for multiple closely-related Tibeto-Burman ethnic groups (the Kiranti family of languages: Bantawa, Chamling, Khaling, Kulung, Athpariya, Yamphu, Bahing, Wambule, Jerung, etc.) of eastern Nepal hills (Solukhumbu, Bhojpur, Khotang, Udayapur, Sankhuwasabha districts). The Rai are predominantly Hindu with substantial Buddhist and animist (the Kirat Mundhum tradition) religious sub-populations.
