About Afro-Kittian Nevisian People
Afro-Kittians and Nevisians comprise approximately 92% of the Saint Kitts and Nevis population per the 2011 Department of Statistics census — among the most demographically homogeneous African-descended national populations in the Americas. The community descends from enslaved Africans brought to British colonial Saint Kitts and Nevis between approximately 1626 and 1834 — Saint Kitts was the first English colony in the Caribbean (founded 1623, before Barbados and Jamaica) and was a major early sugar producer with substantial enslaved-African demographic concentration. Nevis had a parallel demographic trajectory but with somewhat smaller plantation economy. The post-emancipation Afro-Kittian/Nevisian population has remained demographically dominant.
