About White Guatemalan People
White Guatemalans comprise approximately 0.1% of the population per 2018 INE census self-identification — a small but historically and economically prominent community. The community traces ancestry primarily to Spanish colonial settlement (concentrated in Antigua Guatemala and later Guatemala City), 19th c. immigration from Germany (the substantial German-Guatemalan community of Alta Verapaz that established the coffee economy from the 1860s onwards, plus communities in Cobán and Quetzaltenango), Italy, France, Lebanon-Syria, and the United States. Concentrated in Guatemala City elite residential areas and in historic German-Guatemalan coffee-economy zones in Alta Verapaz.
