About Tawahka People

The Tawahka (also called Sumo, the broader linguistic group of which Tawahka is one branch) are an Indigenous people of the cross-border Patuca and Coco River basins — approximately 2,500+ in Honduras (Olancho, Gracias a Dios) plus approximately 9,000+ in Nicaragua. The Tawahka language is part of the Misumalpan family (related to Miskito but distinct). The community lives in the rainforest interior of the Mosquitia region and maintains substantial cultural distinctness from neighboring Miskito populations with whom they have a long historical relationship including some intermarriage and cultural exchange.
