About Mam Maya People
The Mam are a Maya people concentrated in Huehuetenango, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango — approximately 1.36 million per the 2018 INE census. The Mam language is part of the Western Mayan branch (distinct from the Eastern Mayan K'iche', Q'eqchi', and Kaqchikel) and is the second-most-spoken Mayan language in Guatemala when sub-dialects are counted together. The Mam descend from the Mam kingdom centered at Zaculeu that resisted Spanish conquest until 1525. The community spans a substantial elevational range from highland villages above 3,000 meters in San Marcos and Huehuetenango to lowland coffee-producing communities in the Pacific piedmont, producing some intra-population ecological variance.

Skin tone is predominantly Fitzpatrick III-IV with copper-bronze undertone. Hair is uniformly straight, uniformly black to very dark brown. Facial features include broader nasal bases, full lips, and prominent cheekbones; epicanthic-fold variants common. Stature is typically below the Guatemalan national average. Some genetic studies report subtle population-level differences between Mam and Eastern-Mayan-branch populations consistent with the linguistic and historical-political division, though visible phenotype differences are minimal.
