About Kaqchikel Maya People

The Kaqchikel (also spelled Cakchiquel) are a Maya people concentrated in Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango, Guatemala department, parts of Sololá, and Suchitepéquez — approximately 1.34 million per the 2018 INE census. The Kaqchikel descend from the Kaqchikel kingdom centered at Iximché that was the immediate ally of the Spanish during the conquest of the K'iche' in 1524 (a strategic alliance that quickly soured when the Spanish demanded tribute). The Kaqchikel language is closely related to K'iche' (mutual intelligibility is moderate) and is the second-most-spoken Mayan language in Guatemala. The community is concentrated in the highlands immediately west of Guatemala City, with major communities in Antigua Guatemala, Tecpán, San Antonio Aguas Calientes, and many other municipalities.
